What Is Car AC Refrigerant?

Car AC refrigerant — commonly called "AC gas" — is the chemical compound that circulates through your air conditioning system and transfers heat. It absorbs heat from the cabin air, carries it outside the car, and releases it, creating the cool air you feel from your vents.

Refrigerant is not consumed like fuel — a properly sealed AC system should never need a top-up. If your AC is low on gas, it means there's a leak somewhere in the system that needs to be found and fixed before a regas. Our AC repair service in Dubai always includes a leak check before refilling.

⚠️

Never Mix Refrigerant Types

Mixing different refrigerant types — even small amounts — can damage your compressor, cause system blockages, and void your car's warranty. Always use the exact type specified on your AC system label. Contact us if you're unsure.

R12 — Freon (1930s–1994)

Gas Type R12
Dichlorodifluoromethane (Freon) Banned
Used in vehicles manufactured before 1994

R12 was the original automotive refrigerant, used in virtually all cars worldwide from the 1950s to early 1990s. It was extremely effective but was found to be a major cause of ozone layer depletion. Production was banned under the Montreal Protocol, and it's now illegal to manufacture or import in most countries including the UAE.

If you own a classic car that originally used R12, the system can be retrofitted to use R134a. This requires replacing seals and the receiver-drier. Our workshop team in Dubai can advise on classic car AC retrofits.

R134a — The Standard (1994–2017)

Gas Type R134a
Tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) Most Common
Used in vehicles manufactured 1994 — 2017 (and some newer models)

R134a replaced R12 globally and became the automotive refrigerant standard for over two decades. It doesn't deplete the ozone layer, but it does have a high global warming potential (GWP). It was phased out in new EU vehicles from 2017 but remains the most common refrigerant in Dubai given the large number of cars from the 1994–2017 era on UAE roads.

R1234yf — The New Standard (2017–Present)

Gas Type R1234yf
Tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf) Modern Standard
Mandatory for new EU vehicles from 2017 · Increasingly common in UAE new cars

R1234yf is the next-generation refrigerant mandated by EU regulations for all new vehicles from 2017 onwards, and rapidly being adopted globally. It has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 4 — compared to R134a's 1,430 — making it vastly more environmentally friendly. It is mildly flammable, which requires special handling equipment and certified technicians.

⚠️

R1234yf Cannot Be Substituted with R134a

Despite their similar names, R1234yf and R134a are NOT interchangeable. The hose fittings are physically different to prevent accidental mixing. Using R134a in an R1234yf system will damage seals and void your warranty. Always confirm your gas type before any regas.

R744 — CO₂ Refrigerant (Electric & Luxury Vehicles)

Gas Type R744
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) EV / Specialist
Used in select electric vehicles and high-end European cars

R744 uses carbon dioxide as the refrigerant and operates at much higher pressures than other systems (up to 130 bar vs ~25 bar for R134a). It has a GWP of just 1, making it the most environmentally friendly option. However, it requires entirely different system architecture and specialist equipment — not something that can be serviced with standard AC tools.

How to Find Out Which Gas Your Car Uses

You don't need a mechanic to find your refrigerant type — here's how to check it yourself in under 2 minutes:

1

Check Under the Bonnet

Open your bonnet and look for a sticker on the AC compressor, on the hood underside, or near the AC service ports. It will clearly state the refrigerant type (e.g. "R134a" or "HFO-1234yf").

2

Check Your Service Port Fittings

R134a systems have different port sizes to R1234yf — the low pressure and high pressure ports are physically different shapes, making it impossible to accidentally connect the wrong equipment.

3

Check Your Owner's Manual

The maintenance section of your owner's manual will specify the refrigerant type and the system capacity in grams (e.g. "HFO-1234yf, 500g").

4

Use the Year Rule

If your car was made before 1994 — R12 (needs retrofit). 1994 to 2016 — almost certainly R134a. 2017 and newer — likely R1234yf, especially European brands. When in doubt, WhatsApp us your car details and we'll confirm.

Signs Your AC Needs a Regas

Even the right gas in the wrong quantity causes problems. Watch for these signs that your car AC needs attention:

  • Warm air from vents — even when set to maximum cold
  • Weak airflow — the compressor isn't cycling properly
  • AC only cools when driving — not at idle in traffic
  • Visible ice on the AC lines — sign of overcharge or blockage
  • Hissing noise when the AC is on — possible refrigerant leak
  • AC clutch not engaging — pressure too low to activate
  • Musty smell from vents — moisture in the system from low refrigerant

In Dubai's climate, a failing AC isn't just uncomfortable — it's a safety issue during summer. Don't delay getting it checked. Our AC repair and regas service is available mobile across Dubai or at our workshop.
